Frequently Asked Questions

Everything people ask us before their first class — experience, ages, what to wear, how often to train, and how belts work. If your question isn’t here, just ask us.

Getting started

Do I need any previous Jiu-Jitsu or martial arts experience?

Not at all! Our classes welcome complete beginners as well as experienced students. Our instructors work with each student based on their individual experience and ability.

What ages can participate at your gym?

We welcome students of all ages, from little ones as young as 2 years old through adults of any age. There is no age limit! We offer age-appropriate classes designed to help each student learn, grow, and reach their individual goals.

Can I try a class before joining?

Absolutely! We offer trial classes so you can experience the gym, meet our instructors, and see if Jiu-Jitsu or Functional Strength is right for you.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothing is perfect for your first class. A rash guard is recommended for Jiu-Jitsu, but a T-shirt is fine for your first visit. You do not need a gi for your first class.

There is a full walk-through of what a first class looks like on Your First Class.

Do I need to be in shape to start Jiu-Jitsu or Functional Strength?

No! You don’t need to be in great shape to get started. Our programs are designed for people at all fitness and experience levels. You’ll build strength, conditioning, coordination, and confidence as you train.

Programs & training

What programs do you offer?

We offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids and adults and Functional Strength training. Our Functional Strength class focuses on building strength, improving balance and coordination, increasing mobility, and toning the body.

How often should I train?

While you can participate in Jiu-Jitsu once a week, Jiu-Jitsu is more than a workout—it is a program and a commitment to learning and developing over time. Consistency is key.

The more consistently you train, the more quickly you will develop your technique, fitness, confidence, and ability to apply what you learn. Students who train consistently see the best results and make the most progress.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced wearing the traditional uniform, while No-Gi is practiced in athletic clothing. Both styles develop grappling skills, technique, fitness, and self-defense.

What is the difference between Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Karate?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) focuses primarily on grappling, takedowns, ground fighting, and submission techniques. Judo focuses heavily on throws and takedowns, while Karate primarily focuses on striking techniques such as punches, kicks, and blocks.

BJJ is especially effective for self-defense because students learn how to control and defend themselves against an opponent, including situations where a confrontation goes to the ground. But Jiu-Jitsu is about much more than physical techniques—it teaches you how to stay calm under pressure, control your mind and emotions, think clearly when you’re uncomfortable, and respond rather than react. Students develop strength, fitness, confidence, discipline, and the ability to remain composed in challenging situations.

Belts & progression

What do the Jiu-Jitsu belt colors mean?

The belt system represents a student’s progress, knowledge, skill, and development in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For adults, the belt progression is White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. Each belt represents a different stage of learning and mastery—not simply how long someone has been training.

For children, the belt system is age-appropriate and includes additional colors to recognize their development and progress. Belt promotions are earned through consistent training, technical development, attitude, discipline, and demonstrating the skills expected at each level.

We hold several belt promotion ceremonies throughout the year for both children and adults. These are special opportunities to recognize students for their hard work, dedication, growth, and accomplishments. The goal is not simply to earn the next belt, but to grow as a martial artist and as a person along the way.

Our gym & community

Do you offer a women’s-only Jiu-Jitsu class?

Our regular Jiu-Jitsu classes include both men and women training together at all levels, from beginners to experienced students. We want every student to feel comfortable and supported.

For women who prefer to train with another woman, we make every effort to ensure that a female coach and/or female training partner is available to roll with them. Our goal is to create a welcoming, respectful, and safe environment where everyone can learn and train with confidence.

Do your instructors speak other languages?

Yes! We have coaches who speak English and Spanish, and Rafa also speaks Portuguese. We welcome students and families from diverse backgrounds and do our best to make everyone feel comfortable and supported, regardless of their primary language. You can meet the coaching team on the Instructors page.
